As the landscape of retail changes, many outlets are struggling. Macy's is the latest department store to feel the squeeze and is consequently shutting down several locations across the country.

The iconic department store hasn't been able to keep up with the changing world of retail. In this day and age, more people are shopping online than ever. Online retailers like Amazon and Temu are the new department stores, catering to everyone's needs.

Macy's is therefore deciding to pull back on its amount of brick-and-mortar establishments, shutting down a select number. Instead, they will pool resources from the closed shops, and focus much more on their remaining ones.

According to their latest report, they will shut up 66 stores around the US. These Macy's are going to be shutting down in Q1 of 2025. It was announced by Macy's that they are looking at shutting a total of 150 stores in the upcoming years, with these just being the first.

Macy's Is Shutting Down Underperforming Stores To Focus On Their Big Sellers

What made Macy's such a unique shopping experience was the sense of class and occasion that came with the department store. I feel that this is what they are trying to capture once again by shutting down so many Macy's and refocusing on the remaining ones.

According to the report. Macy's is looking to invest in 350 stores to make them as good as they can be. This could signal a return to form for the department store. There is certainly room for a high-end shopping experience on the streets again.

To compete with online shopping, Macy's needs to tap into what it is people love about high street shopping. Clearly, online shopping has a monopoly on convenience, but Macy's could corner the luxury, personal shopping experience quite easily.

By reinvesting the money Macy's will make from shutting down so many stores, they could create truly unique experiences in their remaining ones. Rather than trying to compete with Amazon and others on availability, they could draw people into their stores by offering an enjoyable, and classy shopping experience.

Consolidating and restructuring their business model might be the saving grace of Macy's.
