Filmmaker David Lynch, Known For ‘Blue Velvet’ And ‘Twin Peaks,' Dies At 78 And Fans Are Mourning

Filmmaker David Lynch, known for decidedly offbeat films and TV series such as Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Mulholland Drive, has died at age 78.

Lynch's family made the announcement via a brief

Facebook post. It reads as follows: "It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.' It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."

A cause of death was not specified. The announcement was accompanied by a photo of Lynch with a guitar.

Born in Missoula, Montana, Monday, January 20 would have been David Lynch's 79th birthday.

Lynch Was Daring, Visionary, Unconventional, And Impossible To Categorize Throughout His Career

He Was Unafraid To Take Bold Artistic Risks

Per NBC News, "In a career spanning nearly half a century, Lynch established himself as one of the most stylistically distinctive and thematically daring voices in American entertainment."

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) intoned that Lynch "portrayed a seemingly bucolic America, only to reveal it teeming with the mysterious and macabre...." The outlet also noted that Lynch shared last summer that he had emphysema from smoking. He was allegedly wary of leaving home because he feared contracting COVID-19.

Nominated four times for Academy Awards, Lynch did not get a prized golden statuette until 2019, when he earned an honorary Oscar. Late in his life, Lynch appeared to step away from making films or series. Instead, per THR, he concentrated on painting, transcendental meditation, and a coffee-making business.
