Elton John Opens up About Losing Sight in One Eye: "I've Had the Most Incredible Life and There Is Hope"

Elton John has had an amazing career that spans decades of hits, concerts, and great albums. There is truly no one in the rock and roll genre like him. But he has been going through a lot lately. According to the New York Post via Variety, the music legend says, "Because I lost my right eye and my left eye's not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven't been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything."

What Caused Elton John's Vision Problems?

Per the outlet, the "Rocket Man" artist experienced an eye infection while enjoying a getaway in France in 2024. He lost the vision in his right eye. Despite the seriousness of that condition, he remains staunchly optimistic. "I've had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I've just gotta be patient, that someday science will help me with this one. Once they help me with this one, I'll be fine."

Elton John added, "You mustn't give up hope, you must be stoic, you must be strong and you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things." He got through a double knee replacement, so the singer is not a stranger to daunting medical issues.

His Family Has Been a Source of Strength and Support

He has been with his partner, David furnish, for many years. They "entered a civil partnership" in 2005 and married in 2014. The pair have two young children, sons Elijah and Zachary. John seems to be focusing more on the blessings he has rather than the challenges.

"I mean, you just have to grin and bear it. It does get me down sometimes. But on the whole, I've got a wonderful family; I have two great kids; I have [Furnish]."

The Singer's Famous Friends Have Been There for Him

His famous rock and roll pals have been staying in touch as well. "Paul McCartney FaceTimes me to see how I'm doing. It's really beautiful. The love I've received from him and from Pete Townshend and Mick Jagger and people like that has been amazing. Or you get an email from Keith Richards saying, 'Hello, darling, how are you doing? You know we love you,' and that's it, but it just makes my day,"
