Eric Church Says Most of His Songs are Fueled by Whiskey

An artist's inspiration can come from anywhere. I've found in my time listening to country music that usually, booze is the central source of creative ideas. I've often said that the bar is a sanctuary for most country artists, not too dissimilar from church for them. Whether it's heartbreak or just a good ol' time, a beer or a glass of brown liquor could usually be found at the scene. This is definitely the case for an artist like Eric Church. He says most of the songs we love most from him usually come with a glass of the good stuff.

Recently, Church went on The Fred Minnick Show, where he explained the go-to drink that would loosen him up for performances across the decades. It's even still in his routine for shows today, too. "It was always something I would do right before I'd play a show, even before I was able to legally do it. At that time, I would have a Jack Daniel's and I would always do a little bit of Diet Coke with it, because when you have straight grain alcohol," Eric says.

"It's hard to do when you sing. It's hard on the vocal cords. That was always kinda my starter. That was the thing that I always had. It let me know that it was showtime, and it's still that way now," Eric adds

It doesn't just stop at easing the nerves before shows, either. Church says that he can't quite put pen to paper most times without a little whiskey in his glass either. It's merely a reflection of the best writers in his opinion. "I got a little Hemingway in me, where probably 85, 90% of the songs I've written drinking whiskey," Eric reveals.
