TMZ reported that Elizabeth Jean Hackman, the 95-year-old actor's daughter, revealed they could've died due to toxic fumes. On top of that, his daughter confirmed that law enforcement didn't see signs of foul play. Despite this information, the authorities are still investigating the shocking deaths.

Officers discovered the unresponsive pair after responding to a wellness check on Wednesday afternoon. Once they arrived at their modern property, they found Gene, Betsy, and their dog dead.

By toxic fumes, Elizabeth meant possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Since their home is 25 years old, it doesn't seem old enough to warrant sudden gas leak problems. Nevertheless, as the investigation continues, we may find proof of this poisoning.

According to the CDC, CO is "an odorless, colorless gas that kills without warning." Most homes nowadays have CO detectors to warn residents of gas leaks, which makes the Hollywood actor's situation ever more confusing.

Adan Mendoza, Santa Fe County Sheriff, told the outlet that deputies were free to search the home. The gas company and fire department also responded to the welfare check and made sure no toxic fumes could endanger the officers.

Gene Hackman had a distinguished career that began in California's Pasadena Playhouse in the 60s. After slowly rising to fame and befriending Dustin Hoffman, he appeared in various films and shows.

Gene eventually earned two Academy Awards. One was for Best Actor as Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle in 1971's The French Connection. His next win came from starring in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven in 1992. You may remember him fondly in various other roles such as Lex Luthor in 1978's Superman and its sequels, the historical drama Mississippi Burning, and more.

The acclaimed actor eventually married classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, aged 63, in 1991. He eventually retired 13 years later in 2004 after performing in the comedy Welcome to Mooseport in his final role. Gene spent his final years in that Santa Fe home with his wife and dog, making their deaths a heartbreaking tragedy.
