Per a statement from the Oakland Police Department, Martin became unresponsive after his arrest on Saturday, Oct. 18.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Martin's death is under investigation by police, the city police commission, the community police review agency, and the county district attorney's office.

"The Oakland Police Department remains committed to transparency," the statement read. "However, to ensure the integrity of the investigation, the release of information must be limited. Additional details will be shared as the investigative process allows and in compliance with the law."

Doug Martin Was Struggling With Mental Health Issues

Police officers arrived at a residence about two blocks from the Oakland Zoo after receiving reports of a break-in and "medical emergency" from the same address.

"Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside the residence," the police explained. "While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, the individual became unresponsive."

Martin's agent released a statement from his family. It said the former All-Pro "battled mental health challenges that profoundly impacted his personal and professional life. Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run."

"Following recent media reports about Doug's untimely passing, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances," the statement said. "Doug's parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support."

"Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor's residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police. An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway."

Martin Had an Illustrious Football Career

Known as the "Muscle Hamster" for his short but powerful build, Martin played seven seasons in the NFL. The former Boise State Bronco played six seasons with the Buccaneers, who picked him up in the first round of the 2012 draft.

When he was named an All-Pro in 2015, he rushed for more than 1,400 yards that season. The Buccaneers then signed him to a five-year, nearly $36 million contract extension.

But in 2016, Martin violated the league's substance abuse policy and entered a treatment facility after testing positive for Adderall. In 2017, he sustained a concussion during the opening drive against the Atlanta Falcons and left the game. He returned for seven more carries after being replaced.

Martin then closed out his career in 2018 with the Oakland Raiders.

The Buccaneers paid tribute to Martin on social media: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his record-setting rookie season to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise."
