Upon learning of Claude death, the NHL released a statement.

"The NHL Alumni Association is devastated to share that Claude Lemieux has passed away at the age of 60," the statement reads. "...Internationally, Claude represented Canada on several occasions, including capturing a gold medal at the 1985 World Junior Hockey Championships and winning the 1987 Canada Cup."

The statement then goes on to share details about Claude's surviving family.

"He was loved by his wife and four children, and on behalf of the Lemieux family, we kindly ask that everyone respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Claude spent 21 seasons in the NHL. He played for the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks. His four Stanley Cup wins came in 1986, 1995, 1996, and 2000. He was also the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1995, which is essentially the playoff MVP award.

Having entered the NHL as the 26th pick in the 1993 NHL Draft, Claude carved out a legendary career within the sport.

"I hated this man with all my heart and soul as a Detroit Red Wings fan," one user commented. "But it is impossible not to remember him as a hockey legend, and it was so awesome to see him deliver the torch at the Bell Centre the other day. RIP Claude. Condolences to friends and family."

Another user noted that just the other day, they were talking with friends about Claude's career.

"Damn man. Sorry to hear this," the fan wrote. "Was just talking about him the other night with a buddy when we were watching the Carolina/Montreal game. Dude was an absolute gamer and beast in the playoffs to include 158 pts, 19 game-winning goals and 4 Stanley Cups. RIP Claude."
