Garth Brooks Actually Wrote His Debut Hit For George Strait But Performed It Himself

Garth Brooks is amazing. He is a powerhouse singer, electrifying concert performer, and duets beautifully with his wife, Trisha Yearwood. If you saw them sing "Imagine" so exquisitely at President Jimmy Carter's funeral the other day, you know what I mean. Brooks has been around for a long, long time and is a rightful staple of the country music scene. He wrote his debut hit for George Strait but he ended up performing it himself. However, Strait did sing it on a very meaningful occasion for Brooks in 2012. Wait, what? Here are the details.

Garth Brooks Wrote 'Much Too Young' For George Strait

Brooks Seems To Admire Strait Boundlessly

Per Classic Country Music via Garth Brooks: The Anthology Part 1, "In [the book], Brooks says he wanted to be George Strait for years before he ever signed a recording contract. If he had his way, The King of Country would have recorded  'Friends In Low Places' instead of him." That is really saying something!

According to the outlet, when Brooks relocated to Music City nearly forty years ago, he was intent upon having Strait record a song he came up with called "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)."

Brooks explained in 2020 per Classic Country Music via Country Music Seminar, "I moved to this town to hear George Strait sing 'Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old).' So, long story short, I was lucky enough to get into the Hall of Fame." He made it into the Country Music Hall Of Fame thirteen years ago. Brooks was reportedly aware that Strait would be present to pay tribute to him at the ceremony, but did not know what song the legendary King of Country would choose.

Brooks Had An Emotional Reaction

Per the outlet, "Strait sang the lyrics Brooks wrote 25 years earlier for him, which brought the 'Friends In Low Places' singer to tears." What a wonderful surprise that must have been for Garth Brooks! A dream come true on his big day.

Brooks has gone on to receive all kinds of awards and accolades. But that special moment has to rank right up there with the most prestigious honors of them all.
