The dramatic rescue, captured on a police officer's body camera, occurred late last week. Vasquez, a construction worker, was preparing tacos with his mother when a loud crash jolted them. A white SUV had slammed into a parked car, its tires ablaze as the driver, suffering a medical emergency, kept his foot on the gas pedal.
"I didn't think twice," Vasquez told KTLA. "I grabbed a hammer -- the hardest thing I had -- and ran out."
Vasquez used the hammer to smash the SUV's windows and pry open the door. Flames licked at the vehicle, and burning rubber fragments seared his skin. "It was scary," he admitted. "I just kept thinking, 'Hopefully it doesn't blow up.'"
Samaritan Acts Swiftly
Despite the danger, Vasquez reached inside to unbuckle the driver. A responding officer assisted, helping pull the man to safety as another neighbor, Jorge Jimeno, grabbed a hose to douse the flames. "The fire was close, so I got the hose and sprayed, trying to keep it back," Jimeno said.
The driver, conscious and responsive after the rescue, was tended to by paramedics. His current condition remains unknown. Vasquez escaped with only a minor blister on his leg and said he's doing fine.
"My instincts kicked in," Vasquez said. "I couldn't just watch him lose his life. I had to do something."
The rescue unfolded in Fullerton, a vibrant city in northern Orange County with a population of 143,617, according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1887, Fullerton has deep roots in agriculture, once famed for its Valencia orange groves, and later became a hub for petroleum, transportation, and manufacturing.
