The Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team posted about the incident on
Facebook. A female hiker called Emergency Services on Tuesday, 18, at around 1:15 PM. She notified dispatchers that she had fallen over a cliff at Whistling Arch in Kentucky. The hiker had slipped down a 15-20 feet deep cliff, and the Search and Rescue Team explained that a tree had broken her fall, preventing it from becoming a much more serious incident. A group of first responders tracked down the hiker's location and confirmed she was uninjured before proceeding.
A member of the team rappelled down to the stranded rambler and placed her in a rescue harness. Members of the Search and Rescue team at the top of the cliff then conducted a 'single person raise' to bring her back to safety.
The Hiker Was Trying To Retrieve Her AirPods After Previously Dropping Them
The hiker told the team that she was attempting to recover a set of AirPods before she fell. She reportedly dropped them further up the cliff and lost her footing before slipping down the slope. Per the USDA, the Whistling Arch Trail's main attraction is a vast dry rock shelter. The trail also boasts a 'scenic overlook and buttress-type arch' formation.
The wilderness and hiking trails are beautiful places to explore, but they are wrought with danger if you're careless. Just last week, a driver managed to get their car stuck in the ice and snow around the mountains in Idaho. The driver didn't tell anybody where they were going, nor did they bring any food or have a way to signal for help.
Fortunately, Trevor Chadwick, The City of Star Mayor, and his wife were jeeping around the area for their anniversary. When they found the man stranded, he told the couple he had been there alone for at least 24 hours. It took over four hours to free the driver's vehicle, including a trip to Idaho City for a tow cable. Chadwick said, "I am thankful we were there to help him so he did not become a statistic."
