I Don't Think This Upcoming Remake of 'The Bodyguard' Is Going to Be Good

Hollywood loves themselves a remake. It's remarkably low hanging fruit that can oftentimes prove more lousy and lazy than interesting. Nostalgia, things that are vaguely recognizable can bank so much more than risking an original, compelling idea. Sure, you can remake a film like The Bodyguard but have Warner Bros. even considered if it would be good?

Recently, reports state that Warner Bros. are in development for a remake of the 1992 film with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. So far, no one is attached in the casting department. But Sam Wrench, the director who oversaw the 2023 concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, is attached to The Bodyguard remake. Moreover, Jonathan Abrams, best known for his writing on Clint Eastwood's Juror #2, is writing the screenplay.

All that might be fine. It's possible that you could find a suitable replacement for Kevin Costner. You might even get some decent romantic chemistry between the two leads. But who in the world are you going to find that can replicate Whitney Houston's powerhouse voice?

Who Could Possibly Replace Whitney Houston on The Bodyguard Remake?

Imagine it now: one of these new singers desperately trying to sing "I Will Always Love You." Just thinking about how someone might strain to pull off those high notes gives me a headache. Whitney was one of the most dynamic voices of all time, truly effortless in her power and depth. Not to mention, her acting next to Kevin Costner surprisingly holds up, all things considered. Their chemistry on The Bodyguard is undeniable and Whitney brings an emotionality to the role that really glues it together.

There's no shortage of talented actors and actresses out there. But the film doesn't remotely work if you can't convince the audience that someone could come close to Whitney's voice and presence. Consequently, I don't think this upcoming rendition of The Bodyguard will be worth viewing.
