Paul Williams announced his death via Instagram. He passed away on May 17 at home surrounded by his family. Williams didn't go into detail about his passing in the announcement.
The late songwriter was behind numerous hit songs, especially for the Carpenters. "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "I Won't Last A Day Without You" were all written by Roger Nichols alongside Paul Williams.
Aside from his Carpenters hits, Nichols wrote for artists and bands such as the Monkees, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, and many more. His extensive career has touched hundreds of thousands of people who don't even know his name.
When speaking of his death, his writing partner, Paul Williams, left an incredibly touching tribute.
Roger Nichols' Partner Pens Tearjerking Tribute
"The first song, Roger Nichols and I wrote was called "It's Hard To Say Goodbye."... Sadly, we hit the nail on the head," he began.
"Roger was my writing partner and my music school... a collaborator for years and a friend for life. I was an out-of-work actor looking for a career in music when I was signed by A&M Records Publishing. They were looking for a lyricist for Roger Nichols. An industrial-strength, lucky break that changed my life," he continued.
Speaking of his dedication, Williams wrote, "He was as disciplined as he was talented. I had the attention span of a sea otter... I was ready for a break after three hours, and Roger would plunge ahead for another four or five."
Despite being so talented, Roger Nichols eventually wanted to settle down by the river and raise a family. And that's exactly what he did. "A few years ago, I visited him and met Terry [his wife] and the girls at the house by the river ...and I knew he found his dream."
"You brought love and beauty into this world, and we will never forget you."
The tender words of Paul Williams showcase how hard this loss has affected those close to Nichols. I wish his family, friends, and fans the strength they need to get through this trying time.
