“It Fails or It Blows Up”: California Firefighters Issue Chilling Ultimatum Over Chemical Spill as Locals Ordered To Evacuate

Things have gotten pretty worrying due to a chemical leak at an aerospace facility in Golden Grove, California.

Things have gotten pretty worrying due to a chemical leak at an aerospace facility in Golden Grove, California. The leak originally started on Thursday, May 21, at around 3:30 pm, and has prompted a slew of emergency responses from authorities.

The leak happened at GKN Aerospace when a valve overheated, according to ABC 7. The 34,000-gallon tank was storing a liquid that is used to make acrylic plastic. When the valve split, dangerous vapors were released into the air.

The leak led to lots of school closures, alongside evacuation orders for thousands of residents. And things are looking even more dire as Orange County firefighters inspect the situation with more details.

In a chilling statement, they have admitted that the chemical spill has two avenues of how things will play out. Either it fails, spilling thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the air. Or, it explodes, causing a lot of damage.

But there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the situation. The Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief, Craig Covey, explained that the situation was still unfolding. "We have a tank that is actively in crisis, for lack of a better word. We've been working very, very hard to mitigate it with both the manufacturing company and their third-party contractor to mitigate these types of incidents, as well as our hazmat teams."

The Chemical Spill Has Prompted Evacuation Orders for Residents

The chemical leak has prompted a swift reaction from authorities, who have pleaded with residents to follow guidance.

Covey explained, "We urge residents in impacted areas to follow guidance from emergency officials." Although the fire department has managed to stabilize the valve's temperature by spraying the valve with water, the risks are still really high—as Covey put it, the question of "How do we solve this?" still remains.

The evacuation zone was updated on Friday, May 22, to reflect the growing worry regarding the incident. An approximately 8.6 square mile area in and around Golden Grove, California, has evacuation orders in effect.

A number of schools were also shut down as of Friday because of the chemical incident.

We hope that, above all else, everyone ends up being okay. Our thoughts are with the residents.
