“It’s Pretty Staggering”: Vince Gill Describes Working With His Wife, Christian Music Star Amy Grant

Do you think you could work with your partner? Some people believe in the separation of the personal and professional sides of life. There is two distinctly different kinds of stress that comes with both sides. Consequently, you don't want that bleeding over into one or the other. However, working with your partner eliminates that entirely. Any issues or disagreements carry over at all times. It's potentially harmful to the fabric of strong relationships. We have proof that problem persists in country music already. That's what makes Vince Gill's relationship with his wife Amy Grant so impressive.

The pair not only work together but they also have strong chemistry together too. Making music allows for Gill and Grant to connect in a myriad of ways, creatively, romantically, and spiritually. It's not something that Vince takes for granted either. In a Q&A with his fan club captured by Today in 2002, he really breaks down just how much it means for him to work with his wife Amy on.

Gill likens working on a record with Grant as a "spiritual journey." There's no pressures to record a hit, it's all very liberating instead. "Just from that experience, not having the pressure of going into the studio and saying "Let's record a hit record"... we just got to do this music totally spontaneous. If we wanted to put four hymns together we put four hymns together," Vince says of working on Amy's 2002 album Legacy... Hymns and Faith.

This same idea applies when they hit the road together too. "I got to see first hand the impact that she has made with her music over these 25 years and it's pretty staggering, you know, to see how many lives that she's touched, how many people she's led out of some dark places into finding faith. It was really spectacular to get out there and see that firsthand," Vince recalls.
