'Jeopardy!' Producer Reveals Why They Canned Former Host

Jeopardy! is still going through something of an identity crisis after losing their iconic host Alex Trebek. They tried their fair share of guest hosts and tried to keep the flame alive. The feeling is certainly different now that they don't have Trebek taking care of things. Still, the show seemingly found their footing in a dual set of hosts with Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings. However, the former ends up leaving the show and Jennings ends up having to work Jeopardy! all by himself. How come? Finally, the producers of the show cough up why they split the tandem.

Recently, Rolling Stone published a behind the scenes story at how the iconic game show has reinvented itself amidst the loss of Alex Trebek. It mostly steers positively but there was one obvious elephant in the room when telling the story of Jeopardy! in the last five years. Why did they fire Mayim Bialik in 2023? Producer Michael Davies insisted that one host was the way to go anyway and one of them had to go anyway. One could argue that Bialik's sitcom at the time Call Me Kat could be the primary reason. The game show needs full time participation. However, there's another reason that had gone mostly unsaid.

Jeopardy! Cuts Mayim Bialik for Scheduling and Strike Reasons

Davies explains to Rolling Stone that with Mayim opting not to host the show during the SAG-AFTRA strike, her services weren't required anymore. Ken was getting more comfortable on Jeopardy! himself and they figured it was a good time to hand him the keys. "As time went on, we started to hear more from our television stations that they were starting to see Ken was making a lot of progress as he got more attempts," Davies says. "And then Mayim, which was absolutely her right, elected not to cross the picket line during the [SAG-AFTRA] strike. And as Ken got more reps, I think he got better and he earned the job."

It's important to note that game show hosting is under a different contract with SAG-AFTRA. Regardless, Bialik, as well as other Jeopardy! champions, insisted on standing in solidarity with the show's writers and wouldn't participate. Now, it's Ken Jennings alone working the main show and Colin Jost working a special pop culture edition of the show.
