The 16-time Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest champion will return to Coney Island, New York, on the Fourth of July. Major League Eating (MLE) confirmed the news, ending weeks of speculation.
Chestnut missed last year's event due to a sponsorship conflict. He had partnered with Impossible Foods, which had launched a plant-based hot dog. That move led MLE and Nathan's to bar him from the contest, citing brand loyalty.
Talks to bring Chestnut back began earlier this month. Both sides showed interest in finding a resolution. On Monday, they reached a deal.
Joey Chestnut Returns
"I'm thrilled to be returning to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest," Chestnut said in a statement. "This event means the world to me. It's a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life."
Chestnut addressed the past controversy head-on. "While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs," he said. "To be clear: Nathan's is the only hot dog company I've ever worked with."
He added that he respects there were "differences in interpretation" but is grateful to move forward. "I'm excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do," Chestnut said.
Rival Awaits
He will now face Patrick Bertoletti, who won last year's event with 58 hot dogs and buns. Bertoletti became the first person since 2015 not named Chestnut to take the title.
MLE also celebrated the return of its biggest draw. "The Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest stands as an enduring beacon of freedom," said MLE Chair George Shea. "We look forward to watching the greatest eaters compete on a celebrated platform for international sports."
Chestnut holds the all-time record of 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He'll look to add a 17th title and reclaim his crown on America's biggest eating stage.
