"This is special," Musgraves tells the Recording Academy after her win. "Songs mean everything to me. I wouldn't have what I have in my life if it weren't for songs. 'Architect' was the last song we wrote for Deeper Well. I had time to write one more, and you just never know what you're going to get. So I showed up that day. Songwriting is a lot like fishing. You cast your line and you see what you're going to get, and this song fell out. This song represents -- it's a big question mark. We don't really know how much control we really have in this universe. Every day it seems like there is something on the horizon that feels super dark and hard to deal with. I work a lot of that out through song and I'm just grateful for it."
Musgraves also gave a heartfelt acceptance speech when she was declared the Grammy winner for Best Country Song.
"I did not expect that," Musgraves said. "First of all, I have the absolute best team in the world. I have the best fans in the world. And ultimately, I just want to say, There's much darkness in this world right now, and it just feels so good to be able to fight some of that darkness through song. It's such an honor. Thank you."
Deeper Well
Deeper Well marks Musgraves' first record since Star-Crossed came out in 2021. The record title is inspired by one of the songs on the project.
"Honestly, those words, 'deeper well,' just fell out," Musgraves tells Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. "We were up in New York City writing in one of the best studios I've ever been in, which is Electric Lady, such a vibe, Greenwich Village. And we were in the room, which was Jimi Hendrix's actual apartment...Usually, all my songs, I think most of the time they start as a title and I'm like, 'This would make a good song.' But I think that one just came from just conversation. The lines kept stumbling out. And when we wrote that that day, I felt it was really special to me. And I thought, 'Okay, we've got some songs here.' And I feel like it's a record and it has to be called 'Deeper Well.' I just think it sums up where I'm at."
