On June 11, "The Architect" singer Kacey Musgraves received the Songwriter Icon Award at the NMPA Annual Meeting. One she accepted with gratefulness and humility. During her 8-minute acceptance speech, Musgraves explained a little about her start as a songwriter, but most importantly brought attention to the "divisive and tumultuous" times we're living in.
Alongside paying credence to the suffering outside of the award ceremony, she credited the artists as those who "weather" the storms to provide music.
The most important takeaway from her speech was the last part, and Musgraves posted a clip of the moment herself to her X account.
To end her speech, Kacey Musgraves said, "If there is one thing that has been a common thread through every divisive and tumultuous time throughout civilization, it's songs."
"It's songs of hope, survival, love, songs of faith, songs of grief, resistance, songs of cultural identity passed down through every generation, and it's truly up to us, the artist, the singers, the social commentators, the poets, to weather these storms and pass down new melodies for us all to cling to together, and it's such an honor to carry that responsibility."
Before she left the stage, she concluded, "So may we all continue to sing no matter how dark it might get."
Kacey Musgraves Believes Art Will Help Us Through These Trying Times
It's no secret that civil unrest and a very charged political climate is upon us. No matter your beliefs, there is plenty to be concerned about in this day and age.
Art and expression has accompanied humanity through every era of our existence. Whether such things will get us through these trying times and reflect the thoughts of the people, however, is ultimately up to you to decide.
Musgraves has always let her spiritual and worldly side shine in her music, which is what attracts a lot of her fans. She has also made stance toward the current state of America abundantly clear, which has landed her in virtual hot water very recently.
Take what you will from her speech. Just keep in mind what Charlie Crockett recently said.
