Keith Urban Dishes About How Grueling Life on the Road Can Be: "Why Am I Doing This?"

When most of us think about being a country music star, it's the glitz and the glam that take precedence in our minds. Sure, those moments are real and they do happen. But no one, no matter how famous and popular, lives their whole life basking in the attention they get on the red carpet. Being on the road touring is not a breeze, as Keith Urban, 57, recently revealed, per the New York Post. The intense demands of performing, traveling, and giving a great show day after day take a big toll.

Urban Was Very Candid About How Tough It Is

Per the outlet via an upcoming TV show called The Road, Urban spoke in detail about the exhausting rigors of going from one performing gig to another. "Where do we start? It's a calling, and you're going to do it or you're not going to make it."

He went on, "When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you're sick as a dog, you're in the middle of nowhere and you've got to play your fifth show later that night, and you haven't slept, and you miss your friends, and you're missing your family, and you're completely lonely and miserable and sick, and you say to yourself: 'Why am I doing this?'"

Then Urban responded to his own question. "The only answer can be: because this is what I'm born to do." Artists deal with the inevitable and unavoidable hardships because they can't imagine not doing what they love - singing for the public. As great as their sacrifices are, so are the rewards.

What Is 'The Road' About?

The new show is a contest, with the coveted prize being the opportunity to be Keith Urban's opening act nationwide. A dozen people will be eagerly vying for that chance. Per the outlet, "Gretchen Wilson serves as the tour manager for the series. Urban is joined by executive producers Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan [Yellowstone] throughout the 10-episode first season."

The Road debuts on October 19 on CBS.

According to the New York Post via TV Insider, The Road was filmed months prior to Urban's highly-publicized breakup with his wife of 19 years, actress Nicole Kidman, 58.
