One thing about dating an artist is that you become inspiration for their work. It can be something as sweet as a love song like how Lainey Wilson does for her man Duck Hodges. It could be some writing on a messy breakup. Or other times, it might just be a rumination on old flames. For Keith Urban, he's always raw and candid in his songwriting. That even extends to some of his past exes. One in particular wasn't thrilled about "Somebody Like You" in particular.

Recently, Urban spoke on the Q with Tom Power podcast. There, he talks about his 2002 hit and how he was struggling mentally when penning the record. Moreover, Keith details the relationship he was in that inspired the song. "I was in a bad way personally, struggling a lot and I was in a relationship that was not... I wasn't in a good way, and I thought at the time, 'My girlfriend seems to really love me, I wish I could love myself the way she seems to,'" he says. "So the song was actually, 'I want to love somebody like you do, I want to love me like you do.'"

Once he finishes recording the song, Keith goes to share it with his girlfriend at the time. However, he doesn't realize how the song comes off and it ends up offending her. "She hears it as a love song and it finished and she just looks at me, she goes, 'You're a f-----g hypocrite,' and then walked out of the room," Urban continues. "She's like, 'You don't want to love anyone, you're just an a--hole.' And she wasn't wrong. It wasn't the guy I was, it was the guy I wished I could be."
Keith doesn't elaborate on whether or not that spat ruined their relationship or not. It's totally possible if he explains the intention to her, things resolve. Regardless, he's got the love of his life now with Nicole Kidman so everything worked out.
