Kelsea Ballerini Talks About Motherhood in Emotional New Song “I Sit in Parks”

Kelsea Ballerini got vulnerable with her new single, "I Sit in Parks," which speaks on her thoughts on motherhood.

After performances at The Grand Ole Opry following her breakup from Chase Stokes, Kelsea Ballerini is coming in hot. She's releasing an EP on Friday, November 7, titled Mount Pleasant. The "Patterns" singer also released a new single yesterday, titled "i sit in parks", unvieling a side to her we haven't seen. Even though she reveals that, she's gotten everything she's ever wanted, there are dreams the singer has yet to fulfill.

"Dad brought the picnic / Mom brought the sunscreen / Two kids are laughing and crying on red swings / We look about the same age / But we don't have the same Saturdays". Ballerini sings about her desire to be a mother.

"Did I miss it? / By now is it / A lucid dream? Is it my fault / For chasing things a body clock / Doesn't wait for?"  These lyrics hint at a sense of regret Ballerini might feel, wondering if there's still time for her to have a shot at a family of her own, or if she spent too much time on her career.

"I did the damn tour / It's what I wanted, what I got / I spun around and then I stopped / And wonder if I missed the mark"

The song, which was accompanied by a stunning video this Friday, captures the emotions Ballerini feels so well. It's a beautiful take on a common feeling, one that we don't often hear put to song.

Kelsea Ballerini Is Prioritizing Her Happiness No Matter What Happens

Kelsea Ballerini first sprang into stardom when she signed a record deal with Black River Entertainment at just 19. In 2015, it was clear that Ballerini had something special when she released her debut album, The First Time, which broke records that only Carrie Underwood had reached in 2006. Since then, Ballerini has scored seven No. 1 singles, garnered 32 total certifications from the RIAA, and released five albums that have debuted in the Top Ten.

Of her commitment to her career, but also her happiness, she spoke confidently in her Opry induction speech. "It's so nice and comforting to know that, no matter where life takes me, and no matter if the radio stops playing me tomorrow, and whatever happens, I can always come here, and I can always play country music." She was first inducted into the Opry in April of 2019 by Carrie Underwood.

Years later, after nearly 50 performances, Ballerini shared with BeatRoute that her definition of happiness and success is ever-changing. "My definition of success is are you happy?" she shared. "I really believe in chasing down happiness and that's success to me."
