Kevin Costner Reveals The One Role He Regrets Turning Down

Kevin Costner has quite the up and down resume throughout his career. On one hand, you have his obvious hits, films like Bill Durham, Field of Dreams, The Bodyguard, or Dance With Wolves. However, then you have his infamous bombs at the box office like Waterworld. Most recently, his bet with the Horizon: An American Saga films sees his personal monetary investments go down the drain. This doesn't even include his work in the Taylor Sheridan smash Yellowstone and all the drama there.

It's safe to assume that Costner has at least a few regrets with roles he's taken throughout his career. Some of his bets hasn't always gone to plan and his resume isn't exactly perfect. Is there anything he wishes he could take back, any roles he wishes he took instead? In an interview with Den of Geek, he highlights one film in particular that he wishes worked out.

Kevin Costner Names The Film He Wishes He Could've Done

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels come to mind when talking about films Kevin Costner wanted. Back in 1990, he was offered The Hunt for Red October to play the big Jack Ryan role next to Sean Connery. Ultimately, Alec Baldwin takes over in the role and the film makes a little over $200 million at the box office.

How come Costner didn't jump on it? Unfortunately, he had prior commitments. "I would have done Red October. I wanted to do it, but I had postponed Dances With Wolves for a year, and I was suddenly going to make it. I really couldn't do anything else," Costner explains. "They offered me more money than I had ever seen, and I think they thought I was just stubborn. But I wasn't! 'No' didn't mean 'More money!', it meant that I couldn't do it. I had given my word on Dances With Wolves."

Ultimately, it all works out in the end. Dance With Wolves makes big bank at the box office itself. Moreover, Costner ends up in the Jack Ryan universe anyway, starring in the 2014 film Shadow Recruit alongside Chris Pine, Kenneth Branagh, and Kiera Knightley. He was obviously too old to play Jack Ryan himself but he does get that opportunity to work with Tom Clancy literature.
