American filmmaker Kevin Smith is best known for his independent films, including Clerks and Chasing Amy. But this week, he's making headlines for a different reason. It has to do with the death of his mom, Grace.

In late November, Smith shared an Instagram update on his mom's health, which has been up and down since September 2024. Last year, his mother, whom he lovingly refers to as "Amazing Grace," underwent a life-saving surgery for a malady or a deep-seated illness. Since then, Smith had been in and out of hospitals.
Over Thanksgiving, Kevin went to visit his mom in the hospital, who was apparently "on death's doorstep" at the time. Grace recovered after her two-day visit, as Smith championed in his post. "Don and I are slobbering grateful for our Mom and her uncanny ability to beat the odds yet again," he wrote. "Thank you to the fine folks at the hospital for giving her a fighting chance, and thank you, Mom, for your unstoppable heart and indomitable spirit!"
However, on December 2, Smith shared another update on his mom's health, and this time, it wasn't quite so positive. "The bill for 55 years of unconditional love came due on December 1st," he shared, "and the costly price was having to watch the strongest person I've ever known - my absolute favorite person in the world - exit the stage after a lifetime of setting it for her children. My Mom is gone."
The caption was accompanied by a series of pictures of Kevin and his mom over the years.
Kevin's Mother Was His Biggest Supporter
Kevin, who's had a highly successful career since the 90s, credits his mom as his biggest champion from the start. He explained in his post that, "If you like me or anything I've ever made, she was the blueprint."
Smith described his mother as a "lioness." He explained, "There's never been a day in my life when I didn't know in my bones that I was valued as [a] human being, cherished as a child, and deeply loved beyond reason. My Mom made me feel like I mattered - to our family, to the world, and especially to her."
Grace Smith passed away at the age of 79.
