US Pastor John Sullivan Was Kidnapped Five Days Prior
The daring rescue comes after the Pastor, Josh Sullivan, was kidnapped at knifepoint during a church service on April 10. He was reportedly mid-sermon at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Motherwell when four armed men stormed the building.
The gunmen allegedly wore masks when they entered the church, where 30 people were present, including Sullivan's wife and children. The suspects also reportedly took two cell phones. Rev. Jeremy Hall suggested that the kidnapping may have been "financially related." He also alleged that the gunmen knew Sullivan by name. They forced the pastor into a vehicle they parked a mile away from the church. Per the New York Post, the kidnappers reportedly used Sullvan's Toyota Fortuna to drive to their car. The outlet also points out that kidnappings in South Africa have increased by a concerning 264% over the last 10 years.
Authorities have not released any details concerning the identity of the kidnappers or any demands. It also remains unclear how they knew who Sullivan was.
The police force said "This operation demonstrates the critical importance of inter-agency collaboration and timely intelligence in tackling serious organized crime. The Hawks commend the bravery and professionalism of all officers and support personnel involved in securing the victim's safe return."
