Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, James was often well known for writing popular country hits. "Jesus Take the Wheel" (Carrie Underwood), "When the Sun Goes Down" (Kenny Chesney), and "I Hold On" (Dierks Bentley), namely. Many artists and music industry professionals have been quick to reach out and acknowledge his legacy as a writer and as a friend.
However, there have also been numerous people not in music who have spoken up about the tragedy. Kirk Herbstreit, the former Ohio State quarterback and College GameDay analyst, is one. Just yesterday, he took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to talk about his friend.
The sports announcer admitted that it was actually during his job that he got the news. "Was calling a game last night when I got the news on a text that Brett was in a plane crash and didn't make it. Living in Nashville, I've been very fortunate to meet a lot of incredible people...Brett was certainly that." Herbstreit went on to refer to Brett James as "one of the most talented and yet humble and down to earth guys I've met."
"He was a legend as a songwriter and one of the most respected people in that town. He sang at my 50th along with Casey Beatherd, such a good man. Just heartbreaking-my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they cope with this unthinkable reality."
Brett James Will Be Remembered in More Ways Than One
It's one thing for people in your industry to speak about you, but it's a whole other for people outside it to acknowledge what kind of person you are. It's evident that Brett James was a talented writer, but it seems like he was pretty well known as a person of good character as well.
Known as one of Nashville's most prolific songwriters, James was also the founder of a music publishing company, Cornman Music, and was named Country Songwriter of the Year in both 2006 and 2010. With over 27 No. 1 hits, he will be remembered as one of Nashville's best writers. He will also be remembered as one of their best people, as well.
