Krispy Kreme Brings Back Big Red Doughnuts

Your Sunday morning is going to get a "hole" better. (lame excuse for a donut pun, please excuse me). Big Red, the Texas soft drink, is teaming up with Krispy Kreme donuts for the summer and we are here for it. Debuted at the Barbacoa & Big Red Festival last year, the Big Red Donut is back just in time for the big festival.

What is Big Red Soda?

The sweet soda, which is considered a variety of cream soda, was created way back in 1937 by Grover C. Thomsen and R.H. Roark in Waco, Texas. Some say the soda tastes like bubble gum, but the soda gets its characteristic flavor by mixing orange and lemon oils with vanilla. It sounds like the perfect flavor for a doughnut.

Krispy Kreme Big Red Doughnuts are Back

The Big Red Doughnut boasts a Big Red flavored kreme and is topped with stripes of red frosting. But there's a catch. The doughnuts are only available at the Barbacoa & Big Red Festival on May 16th and 17th at The Greenline SA inside Brooks.

Not in Texas? Don't fret, we have some dessert recipes made with Big Red to curb your doughnut cravings. While it's not the same thing, it's a bit cheaper than a flight to Texas.

Big Red Cake

This Big Red Cake is made using a cake mix, cherry jello and a can of Big Red. Bake the cake as directed then mix up the Big Red Filling. Using the back of a wooden spoon, poke holes into the cake and pour on the soda mixture. Once fully soaked in, frost with a combination of vanilla pudding and frozen whipped topping and serve with a tall glass of Big Red soda. There's nothing better!
