Leap Frog Creator Dies From Assisted Suicide After Alzheimer's Diagnosis

Mike Wood, the visionary behind the LeapPad children's tablet, died by assisted suicide in Zurich, Switzerland, at age 72, according to multiple reports. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Wood chose to end his life before the disease progressed further, his brother Tim Wood told The New York Times. Surrounded by family, he partnered with Dignitas, a nonprofit offering physician-assisted suicide, for a peaceful passing.

Wood's creation of the LeapPad in 1999 revolutionized children's education, sparking the "LeapFrog generation." His legacy as an innovator and educator endures through millions of children who learned with his toys.

From Lawyer to Toy Industry Pioneer

Wood, a former San Francisco lawyer, founded LeapFrog after noticing his 3-year-old son, Mat, struggled to pronounce letters despite knowing the alphabet. This inspired Wood to design the LeapPad, a talking-book tablet that played sounds when children pressed letters. The prototype became a sensation, leading LeapFrog to sell 30 million products by 2008.

The LeapPad topped toy sales during the 2000 holiday season, and LeapFrog became one of the fastest-growing toy companies in history. "He felt everything deeply -- our work, our mission, our audience," said Chris D'Angelo, LeapFrog's former executive director of entertainment. D'Angelo recalled Wood's "high-hair days," when stress visibly showed but reflected his commitment.

Wood retired in 2004 at 51, citing the intense demands of leading a company with 1,000 employees and $650 million in revenue. "There were four or five problems on my desk every day with no good answer," he once told The Wall Street Journal.

A Life of Learning and Giving Back

After retiring, Wood volunteered as a reading teacher in California, bringing LeapFrog products to classrooms for pizza parties and lessons. "He loved teaching the kids," said Bob Lally, a LeapFrog co-founder. Wood also developed SmartyAnts, an online learning program, to continue his educational mission.

In 2021, Wood rekindled a high school romance, marrying Leslie Harlander after divorcing his son's mother, Susan. A 2023 TikTok by his daughter-in-law, Emily Wood, captured him teaching his granddaughter with the original LeapPad prototype, delighting viewers.

"I'm 25 and loved my LeapFrog," one commenter wrote, crediting Wood's toys for fostering a love of reading.

Wood is survived by his wife Leslie, son Mat, brothers Tim and Dennis, and three grandchildren. LeapFrog Enterprises mourned his loss on Instagram, calling him "an innovative leader whose passion led to something remarkable." His contributions continue to inspire young learners worldwide.
