At this rate, the only thing left on the US high street in five years will be burning Tesla charging points and tumbleweeds formed of empty Shein clothing bags and Temu boxes. Yet another department store is staring down the barrel of the bankruptcy gun, as Kohl's closes multiple locations and poleaxes its stock price.

Kohl's, the well-known department store with over 1,100 outlets nationwide, has reported vastly lower earnings this quarter. In 2024, the same period saw an income of $186 million. However, this year's equivalent saw only $48 million.
This information came as part of a report released by Kohl's to their investors. Their latest forecast warned that they should expect a decline in sales between 5 and 7 percent. This news sent their stock down by 24% in 24 hours.
Investors are realizing that Kohl's may not be able to keep up with the economic downturn in the US and the changing face of retail. Across the board, companies are struggling to make profits and adapt.
Kohl's Is Just One Of Many Failing US Businesses
The slowdown in growth and spending in the US markets goes beyond just department stores like Kohl's. There have been huge numbers of restaurants and chains shutting up shop and declaring bankruptcy in the past months. This is causing US economists to start whispers of a recession.
The US stock market has seen nothing but red for weeks amid Trump's harsh policies on tariffs alongside his other nationalistic policies. Only pharmaceutical companies are still seeing profit. In an interview with Fox News, the man himself refused to rule out a possible recession as a result of his decisions.
Department stores, such as Kohl's, have challenges from two sides. The general population's attitude to unnecessary spending has changed. People simply do not have the extra cash to spend at the moment. To add to this, many are opting to shop online, saving money on gas and usually on the products themselves.
If businesses aren't able to keep up with the changing face of retail, they will struggle to weather the economic snowstorm that is just on the horizon.
