According to specialists, it seems that The Container Store, a specialty retail chain store, is close to declaring bankruptcy. Despite the success of Marie Kondo's "Tidying Up" Netflix show in 2019, which featured The Container Store, high prices and market changes rank the chain store as "one of the most financially distressed companies."

Strong competition and factors such as the COVID pandemic, which forced people to stay inside their homes, contributed to the decline of The Container Store. "When people move, they buy a heck of a lot of things related to storage and organization. Without this impetus, Container Store has struggled," Neil Saunders told CNN. He is an analyst at GlobalData Retail.
Saunders then attributed the decline in the Container Store's products to the "weakening of the housing market." Tim Hynes, global head of credit research at Debtwire, does not believe that the holiday season will work wonders for The Container Store. "They are already pretty far down the line," Hynes said.
According to CNN, The Container Store, which has around 100 stores in the United States, reported a sales drop of 10.5% during its latest quarter ending September 28. During this quarter, the company lost $30.8 million.
A Strong Decline
The Container Store's prices are also a big factor when analyzing its inevitable decline. According to the Container Store CEO, Satish Malhotra, the company does not aim to compete with cheaper plastic bin alternatives. "Our objective is not to compete there because we don't have the scale and buying power to do so," Malhotra said during a July interview. "It's a bit of a white glove experience we offer."
Saunders said, however, that the lack of cheaper alternatives has driven customers away from The Container Store. "Most households want cheap solutions, and Container Store delivers relatively expensive solutions," Saunders said. "That's out of kilter with where the consumer is right now."
A Marie Kondo Collaboration
Founded in 1979, The Container Store offers an assortment of products, which include storage containers, bins, and closet organizers, among others. Following the "Tidying Up", The Container Store also joined forces with Marie Kondo and Konmari in 2021, offering an assortment of special products on their website.
"I'm so excited to introduce my collaboration with The Container Store!" Marie Kondo said in a statement at the time. "These organizing essentials are versatile, sustainable and will spark joy in your space for years to come."
"When 'Tidying Up' premiered in 2019 and consumers immediately connected decluttering and organization with The Container Store, we knew that there was an opportunity to create something special with Marie," said the then-CEO of The Container Store, Melissa Reiff. However, the Marie Kondo effect appears to not have rendered encouraging results.
