A 40-year-old man tragically died after falling from a burning hot air balloon during a festival in Zacatecas, Mexico, over the weekend. Identified by police as Luicio N., he saved two passengers before becoming entangled in the balloon's ropes, leading to his fatal fall.

The incident, captured on video, occurred at the First Balloon Festival, part of the Enrique Estrada 2025 Fair.
The tragedy struck around 8 a.m. as the balloon, carrying Luicio and two others, caught fire on the ground. Flames consumed the basket, sending plumes of smoke skyward.
Luicio sprang into action, pulling both passengers from the burning basket to safety. As the balloon broke free and soared upward, he became caught in its ropes, dangling helplessly beneath the blaze.
Video footage showed the balloon climbing higher under a cloudy sky. Luicio, a faint figure against the flames, clung to the rope before falling to his death.
The two passengers he rescued received treatment for first-degree burns at a nearby hospital. Their survival stands as a testament to his bravery.
Zacatecas Secretary General Rodrigo Reyes Muguerza addressed the tragedy in a statement. "We deeply regret the loss of a life during an unfortunate incident at the First Balloon Festival," he said.
Emergency responders reportedly arrived swiftly to aid the victims and recover Luicio's body.
Push for Accountability and Safety
Authorities launched an investigation into the accident, examining potential manslaughter, injury, and abandonment charges. Two individuals, believed to be event organizers, initially fled but were later located when police seized their vehicle in the state capital.
Organizers claimed the privately operated balloon had passed safety inspections, but the cause of the fire remains under scrutiny.
Reyes Muguerza called for stronger safety protocols at public events. "We've urged the State Attorney General's Office to determine responsibility," he said.
He pressed local governments to enhance oversight to prevent similar tragedies. The incident has prompted widespread discussion about safety standards at festivals.
"We have asked the State Attorney General's Office to conduct the corresponding investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibility. We urge all municipal authorities to strengthen their verification mechanisms to avoid these types of risks during their activities and festivities," Reyes Muguerza said.
