Maren Morris Explains Why It Was Hard for Her to Come Out as Bisexual

It's not easy to come out of the closet. Even in an increasingly accepting society, there's still tons of persecution that comes with revealing one's sexuality. There are still plenty of people who frown upon the mere idea of gay people. Sometimes, it even puts relationships with friends and family in jeopardy if they don't accept it. These are all the things that Maren Morris had to grapple with when she revealed she was bisexual.

Mind you, she's never been afraid to express her opinion either, even if it rubs people the wrong way. Consider her departure from Nashville and the country music industry at large. Morris has been incredibly vocal in opposition to people like Morgan Wallen and the Aldean family alike too. But this time, it was different. Recently, Maren spoke to the AP in promotion of her latest album DREAMSICLE. There, she candidly opens up about the struggle of coming out as bisexual.

"I knew that about myself but I didn't really feel like I was a part of the community," she admits. "I felt like I was an ally and like, supportive of the community, but I just maybe internally hadn't had the bravery to go there in myself and say the words out loud, which is so funny because I'm so open.

I think there was just like, a full sweep after my divorce of like, I know these things about myself and I'm learning and learning how to verbalize a lot of it," Maren adds. "That was one of the pieces that like, set the rest free I suppose."

Additionally, Morris is fully aware of her position as a public figure. Consequently, she wants to get ahead of any of the speculation whenever she decides to date around with a woman in the future. "Like being in this sort of role of like never having dated [before], I'm probably going to be dating, you know, out in public," Maren says in a separate interview. "I would like to be able to do that without any sort of like malicious intent from you know, press or bloggers or whatever."
