Dating is not for the faint of heart. Just ask Maren Morris. Morris found herself back in the dating world, after divorcing Ryan Hurd in 2024. Morris and Hurd had been married for five years, during which time Morris's career exploded. So when she found herself single again, she sadly discovered the downfall of being a woman with a hefty bank account.

"This one was actually after I started dating a little bit and just met some f---ing bums who couldn't pay the tab," Morris shares during a recent show (via People). "So I brought to my cowriters this idea, and I was like, 'I've been dating a few losers. I think it's just a stroke of bad luck. It's gonna end soon. I want it to feel like 'Delta Dawn' plus an Irish drinking song.'"
Morris was writing with Tobias Jesso, Jr. and Joel Little that day, two writers who immediately latched onto the idea of "Too Good."
"They were like, 'Okay, you take the wheel on that one,'" Morris recalls.
Maren Morris On Her Split From Ryan Hurd
Divorce is never easy, for anyone, but especially for Morris and Hurd, who together share their 5-year-old son, Hayes. Still, Morris maintains that the lessons she learned make the heartache all worthwhile in the end.
"It's a gift, I've learned, not just a tragedy," Morris says. "I kind of learned to just write through it, whatever I was going through, which is the point of songwriting. I never really wanted to write about those things — but I'm so glad I did because I learned about myself and what I actually love writing about and just being very [un]filtered."
Morris and Hurd also successfully co-parent Hayes, remaining on good terms for the sake of their only child. Morris and Hurd also choose to live close to each other so they can still have family time.
"Our stops are really easy, and we'll have family dinners," Morris tells TZR.
Still, it isn't always easy. Morris admits that one of the hardest parts of their divorce is losing the friends they once shared.
"I saw a really close friend of my ex's at a bar a couple months ago," Morris calls on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast. "I was with my best friend. We all used to hang out together for a decade or more and then it's like, 'Damn, it's just going to be kind of weird.' Maybe it's just going to be weird for the first few years."
