Mariah Carey has reminded all of her fans this week that she resides in the pantheons above when explaining again why she doesn't have a birthday. The famous singer, born 27 March 1969, made the co-hosts of Capital FM laugh when she explained that she doesn't believe in the passage of time.
In a series of quick questions, Jordan North asked Carey if this belief of hers is true. "That is true," she confirmed. "I just don't believe in it."
Chris Stark, understandably confused, asked her to clarify whether she meant "time zones," but alas. Mariah Carey simply means time itself. "No, just let it go."
Sian Welby, looking for more clarity, asked the eccentric singer whether she celebrates her birthday. "I don't have a birthday, no."
The 56-year-old singer then clarified that she does acknowledge anniversaries, however.
What?
Mariah Carey Acknowledges The Passing Of Time Despite Not Believing In It
I'd like to say that it really doesn't matter that Mariah Carey has a contradictory and strange relationship with time. Is it that it's confusing to her? Is she trying to be a little quirky? Is she just having fun? Who knows.
But I will say that I can't help but be taken aback by what she next says.
Welby then asked Mariah Carey how they'd go about scheduling a meeting. To which she simply said, "I would have someone call you and figure it out."
So she does acknowledge that time passes, but she simply can't be bothered with it. To go about your day, not caring about the time and having a team work doubly hard to schedule everything is a level of privilege that most people can't even fathom.
To "just let [time] go" is an impossibility for everyone else on Earth trying to survive and get by. Choosing to be ignorant of time and birthdays, yet not anniversaries just proves that Carey doesn't not believe in time, but simply doesn't want to concern herself with it anymore.
Is this a bad thing? Who's to say. Does it matter? Not really. But it does present as a bit of a culture shock that someone can be so wealthy and famous that time doesn't really mean anything to them anymore.
