A little background on Matthew McConaughey that you may not know, is that he is very particular with his name. Meaning, he will only go by Matthew, never Matt or other variations of nicknames. That is a lesson that his mother instilled in him when he was very young. The NY Post shares the story of the moment that Matthew learned the importance of his name.

He was in Kindergarten and a friend wanted him to play outside on the monkey bars with him. His friend referred to him as Matt instead of Matthew, and Matthew thought nothing of it. That was until his mother grabbed a hold of him and reminded him of the importance of his name. She said, "Don't you ever answer to Matt again, I named you Matthew from the bible." From that day on, Matthew only ever responded to his full name again.

However, this poor Australian reporter was unaware of his history and life lessons. The reporter shared with the Post that he meant no offense with the nickname. He shared that nicknames are a common occurance in Australian culture. He said, "Aussies love to give people nicknames as a way of appearing friendly and familiar, and to break that barrier when you first meet someone."

Additionally, the interviewer was also named Matthew, and he has no problem going by any nickname. So, he assumed the same would be fine for his fellow Matthew. He even admitted that he didn't think anything of the correction, he just assumed that "he was just riffing off the fact that we [meaning Matthew and the reporter] both had the same name."

It wasn't until later that the other Matthew learned of Matthew McConaughey's story and life experience that taught him the importance of his name.

No Harm No Foul

Despite the semi awkward encounter with the star, reporter Matthew felt no animosity towards McConaughey. He told the Post, "That little hiccup, if you can even call it that, did not impact the interview at all." Additionally, he elaborated that he was happy that the star spoke up and told him what he preferred to be called, rather than just sitting silently.

The reporter shared, "I respect the fact that he chose to let me know what his preference was rather than just leaving it be out of politeness and having me call him something he doesn't identify with. He was assertive without being rude. He was perfectly polite, in my opinion." The rest of the interview went on smoothly and McConaughey was chatty, friendly, and offered great quotes.

Fans were supportive of the star and the interviewer, sharing how they understood the confusion but also thought McConaughey dealt with the awkward encounter well. Here are some of the comments.

"I don't think that was awkward at all. It was friendly, even."

" Ok as awkward/funny a moment this was, it's also a great example of being direct and assertive while maintaining kindness and respect."

"I feel like I would have been confused if I was named Matt interviewing a guy named Matthew and he just said "hello Matthew please."

"I love his attitude though. Holding his boundary with respect, no drama, a simple request (tbh it would have also gone over my head if my name was Matt so I feel you)."
