There's a reason they always tell you to make the safe bet and learn a trade. Working in any creative industry always leads to a strong possibility of not making a ton of money. You could be deep into adulthood without much to show for it. That big break doesn't always magically reveal itself. Consequently, those pockets end up looking a little dire after a while. That's the truth for the iconic daytime talk show host Maury Povich. Before he was revealing whether or not someone was the father, he was scraping along to get by.

Recently, Povich launched his new podcast after calling it a career in television. His latest episode sees him talking to Canadian former ice hockey player Sean Avery. The conversation starts simple enough, asking how old Avery is. Afterwards though, Maury responds to the 44 year old by pivoting to an aside about the tumultuous place he was at by that age. "First of all, I was dead broke at 44," Povich admits to Avery's surprise. "I mean, really dead broke. Couple of years later, this wild crazy Australian buys the television stations. In a second, I'm off to New York to do this crazy tabloid show called A Current Affair. And the rest is history."

The Australian in question is Rupert Murdoch, billionaire media mogul extraordinaire who co-founded Fox Broadcasting Company that aired Maury's show. It took Povich's parents a long time to feel remotely comfortable about their son, big time talk show and all. "My parents, they were so worried. My father was so worried that money just burned through me, that there was a hole in my pocket," he says.
"I think everybody should get to the point that their parents don't have to worry about them anymore. And I was dead in my 50s or 60s before that happened!" Maury adds.
