Mrs. Doubtfire Gone Wrong: Man Caught Impersonating His Deceased Mother for 3 Years To Collect $60,000 Pension

A man from Italy took that whole "Mrs. Doubtfire" thing a little too far. Read about the the charges he could face here.

Robin Williams won the hearts of people everywhere with the role of Mrs. Doubtfire in that classic 1993 film. Although Doubtfire has been a popular costume for years, no one has ever thought to take the character too seriously. Except for a 56-year-old man in Italy. Apparently, this guy thought dressing up as an older woman Robin Williams fashion was a good idea. Now, he's facing criminal charges. Why, do you ask? Apparently, it wasn't Doubtfire that he was trying to impersonate.

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the unemployed man was trying to hide his mother's death so that he could claim her survivor's pension from her late husband. His plan? Well, let's just say it involved a blouse, some lipstick, and a brown wig. That's right, in an effort to collect $60,000 worth of funds, this guy dressed up like his deceased mother and continued to use her identity.

So, exactly how long did this scheme go on for? Well, according to the police, the man's mother, a woman by the name of Graziella Dall'Oglio, was found "mummified" in her home during an investigation. Dall'Oglio died in 2022, so there's no telling how long this had been going on.

Impersonator Was Caught Attempting To Renew His Mother's ID

It didn't take too long for Dall'Oglio's son to get caught in his disguise. While he was visiting a registry office in Borgo Virgilio on November 16, the former nurse attempted to renew Dall'Oglio's identity card. But noticing that there was something "off" about his makeup and hair, the clerk chose to contact the police instead. They also contacted the mayor, Francesco Aporti.

It wasn't long after that that the 56-year-old admitted to his crimes.

Apori said of the disguise, "She looked very much like the woman in the photo on the ID. But there was something that didn't convince the employee, like the hair on her neck, the heavy makeup, and it looked like beard holes were protruding from the greasepaint." The mayor continued, "[We] analyzed the video surveillance footage and saw the woman arrive in a car. Alarm bells ringing: the woman doesn't have a driver's license...piece by piece, the picture of this unpleasant situation began to emerge."

While the investigation is still ongoing, the man is looking at possible charges for fraud against the state and improper concealmeant of a corpse, as well as impersonation.
