NASCAR Sues Michael Jordan And 23XI Racing

NASCAR is suing Michael Jordan's racing team, 23XI Racing, accusing it of scheming to secure preferential treatment. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday and obtained by The Athletic, also targets Jordan's longtime business partner, Curtis Polk. NASCAR alleges they operated as "an illegal cartel" in a bid to manipulate the sport's structure.

The legal action pulls Front Row Motorsports into the fray, naming it as a co-conspirator. NASCAR claims the two teams hatched a plan to pressure the organization into accepting their terms.

They allegedly launched media campaigns, meddled in broadcast agreement talks, threatened to boycott events, and staged a group walkout from a NASCAR Team Owner Council Meeting, according to the outlet.

NASCAR singles out Polk as the driving force. He reportedly took charge of negotiations for all teams, orchestrated their moves, and strong-armed those considering abandoning the effort. The lawsuit asserts Polk's actions disrupted NASCAR's attempts to renew lucrative media rights deals, a critical revenue stream for the sport.

NASCAR Accused in Suit

This filing responds to an earlier lawsuit from October 2024 by Bob Jenkins, owner of Front Row Motorsports. Jenkins has deep ties beyond racing, controlling hundreds of KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's, and A&W restaurants under the Yum! Brands umbrella.

His initial suit accused NASCAR and CEO Jim France of wielding "anticompetitive and exclusionary practices" to enrich themselves while squeezing premier racing teams.

At the heart of the clash lies NASCAR's charter system. The Athletic explains it as the sport's version of franchises, ensuring charter holders financial perks and a guaranteed starting spot in all 36 Cup Series races. Control over these charters sparks fierce contention, fueling this legal showdown.

NASCAR's countersuit signals a fierce pushback. It casts 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports as threats to the sport's integrity. The organization aims to safeguard its governance and economic stability. Meanwhile, the teams portray their actions as a fight for fairness against a dominant authority.
