News Anchor Steps Away Months After Viewers Expressed Health Concerns

Leon Harris, a veteran anchor at NBC affiliate WRC-TV, announced his departure from the station on Tuesday, ending an eight-year tenure with the network. Harris took a four-month leave of absence last year to focus on his health and family. His exit follows a 40-year career in journalism amid a shifting media landscape.

"After 40+ years of nonstop work and dramatic industry changes, I've made the difficult decision to step away from NBC4," Harris wrote in a statement. "This is the right time to prioritize my health and family. I'm grateful to NBC4 for having me on their team and to my colleagues, friends, and viewers who welcomed me into their homes. It's been an honor."

WRC-TV confirmed his departure on Instagram. "We are grateful for Leon's eight years of service to our newsroom," the station posted. "We thank him for his commitment to our community, dedication to journalism, hard work, and friendship. He will be missed, and we wish him the best."

Harris' decision follows a notable incident on Nov. 28, 2024. During a Thanksgiving broadcast, he appeared to slur his words and stumble over the teleprompter. Viewers voiced concern on X, with one user sharing footage and urging the station to check on him. Another called the segment "hard to watch" and hoped for his well-being. Meteorologist Ryan Miller addressed the audience that night. "We heard from many of you," he said. "We assure you Leon Harris is fine. The News4 team appreciates your concern."

Four days later, on Dec. 2, WRC announced Harris would step away to address health issues. "We -- and you at home -- care deeply about Leon and wish him well," the station stated.

Anchor Offers Apology

Harris joined WRC in 2017 after 13 years at ABC affiliate WJLA, The Washington Post reported. He has openly discussed his struggles with alcohol, including DUI arrests in 2013 and 2022. Following his January 2022 arrest, Harris spoke to viewers in March. "I let a lot of people down," he said on air, per WTOP. "I took time to reflect and work with professionals to control this disease of alcoholism. It's treatable, and I've sought help to embrace recovery."

WRC suspended Harris after the arrest but later reinstated him. In June 2022, a judge sentenced him to one year, suspending all but 10 days, plus three years of probation. In a July 2022 WRC interview, Harris expressed regret. "I cannot tell you how sorry I am," he said. "I'll try to show I deserve a shot at earning your trust again."
