So far, Breanna Nix has covered two previous American Idol contestants' songs, whipping out her second on this week's Showstopper event.

Her first cover was for the audition stages of American Idol, where she sang Underwood's own "Jesus, Take The Wheel." It's a risk to sing someone's own song to them, but it paid off. She has a powerful, controlled voice, and she did the song justice.
This week, she pulled out another American Idol cover and gave us a bit of Kelly Clarkson. We got to hear her version of "The Trouble With Love Is." As far as covers go, she did an amazing job. It's good to hear someone with a genuinely trained voice. She hit the notes, and her voice came on powerful and not shouty.
It's easy to slip into the habit of screaming with a song with such a vocal range. But I think Breanna Nix did a fantastic job. The stay-at-home mom has clearly not been wasting her hours around the home. She was certainly a darn sight better than a number of the other contestants that week.
Covering Classics On American Idol
Deciding to cover judges' or past winners' songs on American Idol is a risk. Singing someone's own song to them can be a make or break. Nobody knows a song better than the original artists. But for Breanna Nix, it has paid off from the very beginning.
Deciding to perform Underwood's song to her at the auditions gave her the chance to show how she can make it her own. Once again, she has done the same with the Kelly Clarkson cover. She has the vocal control and talent to do them justice.
The crowd loves a good American Idol cover, too. Many of the people in the crowd are huge fans of the show. They know most of the previous winners and possibly even watched them win. Seeing a classic of a previous winner played is a sure-fire way to get them out of their seats.
I have no doubt Breanna Nix will go far this season. We may see a few more covers yet.
