Paramount Cancels CMT Awards for 2025 After Austin Move

One of country music's most prestigious nights has been officially lost to dreadful budget cutting. Recently, Hollywood Reporter revealed a memo from parent company Paramount that owns CMT. There, it shows that they have merged with Skydance Media. Consequently, that merger has brought on reevaluations to their awards show slate and pauses them until further notice.

Currently, there are only two awards shows that aren't affected by Paramount's decision to go back to the drawing board. Those are its most prominent shows, the Video Music Awards and Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Bruce Gillmer, chief content officer of all things Paramount, reveals why they're cutting the CMT awards this year. "We are pausing a few events for 2025, as we look to reimagine and optimize our events slate going forward," he says.

Bruce goes on to try and reassure fans by emphasizing their desire to give them the best shows possible. Ultimately, they want shows like the CMT Music Awards to be the best it can be in its new regime. "Our world-class events remain a key component of Paramount's music offering as we continue to raise the bar in delivering iconic, unforgettable performances and moments that drive pop culture," Gilmer adds. "We have the best team in the business, and we are grateful for your hard work and dedication in bringing these events to life."

There's no word on what's next for CMT or if there will be a show for 2026. Truthfully, there's not a lot of room for enthusiasm when looking at Paramount. They've already slashed almost all content on the Comedy Central, CMT, and MTV sites. Additionally, the company made an abundance of layoffs as a means to minimize spending. I wouldn't be too surprised if they try and consolidate these programs and combine them. Or, worse, maybe they cut some of these programs off permanently if it doesn't fit their quota.
