Paul McCartney Had The Most Heartwarming Response To Vince Gill Singing Beatles Classic

When you are Paul McCartney, the co-writer of tons of classic songs during his bygone Beatle days, you get used to other singers doing those songs. Some of them may be right on the money. Maybe others are not as impressive. But when Vince Gill sang "Let It Be," McCartney's response was generous and sweet. It proved what a classy person he is and has always been.

This is what happened. Per Taste Of Country, "Last April, The Eagles backed Paul McCartney for a performance of the classic Beatles hit 'Let It Be' during a tribute show for Jimmy Buffett. That meant Gill was onstage with McCartney in front of an audience, playing on a song that was a big part of his own life and musical upbringing."

Vince Gill Warily Performed Paul McCartney's Part On 'Let It Be' During A Rehearsal

For the purpose of a pre-show soundcheck, Gill sang "Let It Be." Perhaps feeling overwhelmed and a bit intimidated by the notion of the ex-Beatle hearing him, Gill tried to dodge that. He failed. Per the outlet via American Songwriter, Gill said, "Sure as hell, he walked in and they didn't tell me. I was singing 'Let It Be' for all it was worth."

McCartney Was Incredibly Gracious To Gill

As Gill recalled it, McCartney was very deferential and amiable about the whole thing. "He came over, gave me a giant hug and said, 'I'll believe you sing that song better than all I do,' I said, 'Well, that's not true, and you know it. But thank you.' It was just cool that he got to hear me sing a little bit of it."

Gill also had a chance to tell McCartney how meaningful that song was to him.

I said, 'You have no idea what this means to me.' I said, 'That's the song that was playing the first time I ever slow danced with a girl.'"

McCartney replied, "Well, I hope it worked out for you."

Gill told him, "'No, it was seventh grade, a little young for that.' But it was really cool."

What a nice encounter they had, and how great that Vince Gill shared it with the rest of us!
