In December 2023, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance Judge Paula Abdul filed a lawsuit against Nigel Lythgoe. She reported two instances of sexual assault against the former producer. Abdul also reported one case of sexual assault against one of her assistants.
According to the news outlet People, the pair settled in an "unconditional" manner on Monday, December 9th, 2024. When a legal dispute is "settled," it means both parties have reached an agreement outside of court.
People also published a recent statement by Abdul:
"I am grateful that this chapter has successfully come to a close and is now something I can put behind me. This has been a long and hard-fought personal battle. I hope my experience can serve to inspire other women facing similar struggles to overcome their own challenges with dignity and respect so that they, too, can turn the page and begin a new chapter of their lives."
Lythgoe Responds To The Settled Lawsuit
Nigel Lythgoe has always denied the sexual assault claims. In a report by People back in October, Lythgoe responded to an amended complaint from Abdul, dismissing it as "appalling lies." The report covers claims that there are multiple gaps in Abdul's story.
Abdul and Lythgoe's relationship is also called into question thanks to the tone of several text messages shared between them. Ultimately, there's a lot of hearsay and speculation from both parties without solid evidence.
People also published a separate statement from Lythgoe on Friday, December 13th, 2024, regarding the settlement:
"We live in a troubling time where a person is now automatically assumed to be guilty until proven innocent. A process that can take years. That is why, like Paula, I am glad to be able to put this behind me. I know the truth, and that gives me great comfort."
With the court case settled, it appears both parties are ready to move on with their lives. Naturally, we don't know what the settlement entails, but Abdul and Lythgoe seem happy with the outcome.
