27 years is a massive commitment. Some people split from their marriages in just a few years or less. 27 years is nothing to scoff at, something anyone could be proud of. This is true in any relationship, platonic, romantic, or professional. In the case of Pearl Jam, they've been a tightly knit group throughout their time together. From Eddie Vedder's powerful voice to Matt Cameron and his distinct drumming, the continuity keeps them as one of rock's most iconic bands.

However, unfortunately, the band has reached the end of the road with Matt. Recently, he went on Instagram to announce that he's sadly taking his leave from Pearl Jam. It's not immediately evident if there was a quiet conflict in the band or if Cameron is just hanging up the drumsticks. Regardless, he remains incredibly grateful for the time spent and the music they've made. Moreover, he leaves the potential for new ideas and opportunities in the future.
Matt Cameron Leaves Pearl Jam Behind After 27 Years
"After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. "I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart," Cameron writes.
In a message from the rest of Pearl Jam, they define him as integral to the band's success. Without their precious drummer, they would miss a lot in their work. "From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer," they write.
"He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt," the band concludes.
