Pop singer Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo has been sentenced to death. The Iranian singer is known to fans as Tataloo. Courts sentenced the 37-year-old to death for blasphemy. This comes after he had been serving a 5-year sentence in prison for a litany of charges.

However, the prosecution reopened his case pursuing a blasphemy charge against the pop singer. The court system found him guilty of insulting the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Iran's Supreme Court brought down the new sentence.

"The supreme court accepted the prosecutor's objection" to a previous five-year jail term on offenses including blasphemy, the reformist newspaper Etemad reported on Sunday. "The case was reopened, and this time the defendant was sentenced to death for insulting the prophet."

It's likely that the pop singer will appeal the verdict. However, things are looking dire for the singer. Still, there's hope. According to reports, the ruling in Tataloo's case is not final. The Iranian judiciary officials confirmed that the final verdict hasn't been issued.

"He has recently become eligible for leniency under legal provisions. Leniency provisions, or legal reprieves, are measures outlined in criminal law to assist convicts in line with the restorative justice approach," the Iranian judiciary said in a statement according to Iran International.

The singer's verdict comes after Iran executed more than 900 people in Iran in 2024.Prior to his arrest, the singer had been living in Istanbul. He fled Iran after getting arrested several times. He also failed to get a music activity license in the country.

Unfortunately for Amir, Turkish police arrested him in December 2023. They then turned him over to Iran authorities for his crimes. Iranian authorities previously sentenced him to 10 years in prison for promoting "prostitution." They also claimed the singer published propaganda against the government and also obscene content.

It's a strange reversal of fortune for the pop singer. In 2015, he actually supported the Iranian government and even released a song supporting the nuclear program in the country. Things aren't looking good for the singer. It remains to be seen what comes of the case.
