According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Utz Quality Foods has issued a voluntary recall on some flavors of its Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips.

Why Are These Potato Chip Brands Being Recalled?

Utz Quality Foods was notified that a seasoning that uses dry milk powder may contain Salmonella sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third party.

As you may remember, California Dairies, Inc. was the supplier of the powdered milk used in 13 beverage mixes manufactured by the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company affected by a recall last month.

According to the FDA, the seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use. However, Utz Quality Foods is issuing the products out of an abundance of caution. Not all Zapp's and Dirty brand varieties, or other products manufactured by Utz, are affected.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Salmonella is a bacterium that leads to infections caused "by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs or egg products, or by drinking unpasteurized milk."

Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, and also stomach cramps. They can typically appear within 8 hours to 3 days after exposure.

While it can be life-threatening, most healthy people recover within a few days to a week without seeking medical help.
