Richard Dreyfuss has had a long and storied career as an actor. At 77, he will forever be remembered for his famous role in Jaws. The Steven Spielberg-helmed blockbuster about a toothy predator wreaking deadly havoc in the water is marking its 50th anniversary this year. Per People, Dreyfuss unfortunately had to bow "out of a fan convention after coming down with viral bronchitis."

The Florida-based event was SharkCon on this past July 12 and 13. The prestigious sponsor was National Geographic. The actor was scheduled to take snaps with fans and sign autographs for members of the public.
Richard Dreyfuss Was Genuinely Regretful About Not Appearing At The Gathering
In a video on the event's Instagram page, Dreyfuss explained why he was unable to attend the big shark-themed get-together. He is nestled in a bed - maybe a hospital bed? - under a blanket with a Jaws 50 logo on it. His voice sounds a little weak and halting.
Dreyfuss shared, "Hello cons, I'm very, very sorry to tell you that I've been diagnosed with viral bronchitis. And I've been told by my doctors I cannot fly, and I would have to fly five hours to get there. I'm terribly sorry because I had planned to be there and had been looking forward to it."
He noted, "I feel terrible about not showing up, and I'd feel worse about exposing you to this apparently very viral illness. But there will be other times and I will make it my business to show up and I want to wish you all good luck and happiness."
Dreyfuss also mentioned, "I want you all to feel very sorry for me. And very sorry for yourselves. I'm in a lot of pain, and that has to come first, my health, and I feel very good about having the time and enough health."
