Rob Lowe Gives Update On Sequel To Classic '80s Film

Two things about Hollywood: they love to retell old stories and they adore the '80s. Sometimes, they end up fantastic. Take Top Gun: Maverick, a film so good, they might risk making it a trilogy. Then, there's the other side of the spectrum. Ghostbusters immediately comes to mind. The Karate Kid films of the 21st century are all pointless and derivative. The last Indiana Jones film had no business being made. However, Rob Lowe is gambling on the idea that one of his '80s classics is going to become a hit sensation.

Recently, he spoke to PEOPLE, where he opened up about St. Elmo's Fire 40 years later. Rob plays as William "Billy" Hicks in the 1985 flick, a frat boy with a penchant for the saxophone. Lowe stars alongside fellow members of the Brat Pack Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, and more. The original film follows a group of college kids who just graduated, all trying to figure out what to do with their lives. So what could they do in a sequel now that the coming of age is over? Apparently, we'll see soon enough.

Rob Lowe Teases Script for St. Elmo's Fire 2

"We're working on the script, and it's really getting good. I think it's super valid to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life," Lowe argues. "Because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — 'What do I do when I get out of college?'"

Apparently, this film has been in the works since June 2024 when Deadline first reported it. As far as any additional details are concerned, Lowe is pretty hush though. Maybe the film could follow their kids going through college. Perhaps it could ruminate on the sobering reality of getting older. Who knows? Worst case scenario, it fills in the nostalgia crave for some people and it fills in on some streaming service.
