Shane Gillis Refereeing A Sumo Match Is About As Shane Gillis As You Can Get

Shane Gillis has refereed a sumo match, which is a field I can totally see the comedian stepping into.

And no, he didn't mock-referee a faux sumo match. This was a legit match, and the severely out-of-his-depth funny man had to referee the titans. They were playing for $250,000, so it was a serious match. Not that Shane Gillis took it seriously, of course.

On April 9, Pat McAfee's Big Night AHT event in Pittsburgh took place. It's a live event that throws a whole deal of live spectacles to its audience. Live music, comedy, and apparently sumo matches.

I find it funny that the likes of Jelly Roll, Ernest, and Parker McCollum were at the event, yet here I am writing about Shane Gillis and his hilarious attempt at refereeing.

Gillis did not know how to referee a sumo match. He was given somewhat of an explanation, but everything went out of the window when he was in the thick of it. After a shaky attempt of a pre-fight laydown, he spent the match making vaguely Japanese-sounding noises and saying "Oh hey!"

Not that I know anything about sumo wrestling to be critiquing the comedian. In all honesty, I feel like he fit in perfectly. Should he learn the right things to say, I think he'd make a damn good sumo referee.

You can watch the video below. It's pretty long, but you can skip a large swathe of it to get to the fight.

Fans React To Shane Gillis Refereeing A Sumo Match

The longer I'm in this job, the more bizarre the stories are becoming. Fans and internet folk took to the comments to share their thoughts.

"Shane looks like he's just winging a presentation in high school," one joked.

"Shane just trying not to lose it the entire match was awesome," another added.

"Bro is just doing all the side quests," a third laughed.

"The referee we didn't know we needed," wrote another.

"The coworker that lied on his resumé and still got the job," jabbed one more.

We need Shane Gillis in more absurd situations like this.
