Massive Recall of 1.5 Million Bags of Shredded Cheese Sold at Target, Aldi, and Walmart—Products May Contain Metal Fragments

You might want to check and see if you purchased particular brands of shredded cheese. Over 1.5 million bags of this product, which was manufactured by Great Lakes Cheese Co., are being recalled. The action is being taken due to possible contamination with metal fragments, per the New York Post. Per the outlet, ",,,the Hiram, Ohio-based firm initiated the voluntary action affecting multiple items sold at major retailers."

The reason for the huge recall, which actually began two months ago in early October, is "potential metal fragments in supplier raw material...."

People should not consume this cheese. They are being advised to either discard the cheese or return it to where it was bought for a refund.

The affected cheese was sold in 31 states and also in Puerto Rico as well.

How the FDA Classified This Recall

Per cbsnews.com, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 1 labeled this a Class II recall. In other words, consuming the product might "cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences."

What Is Included in the Recall

The following products are affected by the recall. According to the outlet, they include low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese, Food Club finely shredded pizza-style four-cheese blend (117 cases), Italian-style shredded cheese blend (15,490 cases), Target's Good & Gather mozzarella & parmesan shredded cheese blend (1,850 cases), pizza-style shredded cheese blend (4,298 cases), Happy Farms by Aldi Italian style shredded cheese blend (1,900 cases), and mozzarella and provolone shredded cheese blend (4.131 cases).

Each case contains between four and 12 bags of the product.

The biggest share of the recall involves "nearly 236,000 cases of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese," per cbsnews.com. It was sold under a variety of brand names including Good & Gather at Target, and Great Value from Walmart. The "sell-by dates rang[e] from January to late March 2026, according to the FDA."

Great Lakes Cheese Was Founded in 1958

According to the company's web site, it was launched in 1958 by Hans Epprecht. His core values were "hard work, honesty, and integrity." The company now has nine plants located in half a dozen states with 4.600 employees. Great Lakes Cheese is still owned by the Epprecht family.
