50 years of making films, Steven Spielberg has seemingly done it all. He's responsible for countless cultural classics. Jaws celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, one of the greatest thrillers of all time. Indiana Jones remains a classic, the kind of series where people didn't even mind an older Harrison Ford reprising the role. They'll do Jurassic Park spinoffs for an eternity. That's not even accounting for his great original films, Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan.

His filmography runs deep. However, there's one genre of film that Spielberg hasn't made up to this point: a Western. Why? Apparently, the right story hasn't hit him like an epiphany. However, now, it seems like he's setting his sights on finally correcting this. Recently, the director spoke with The Hollywood Reporter at an event where he would be honored with a theater in his name on the Universal Pictures lot. There, he admits that he still has "an appetite for a Western, which I will someday hopefully do. It's something that's eluded me for all of these decades."
Steven Spielberg Wants to Make a Western Film Soon
Besides the Western, it's not much the filmmaker hasn't done in his career. The thrillers, the dramas, the sci-fi epics, the list goes on. After he wraps up the one genre he hasn't done, is it safe to assume he'll hang it up? Not at all. It's not even a thought in his mind. "I'm making a lot of movies and I have no plans... ever... to retire," Spielberg remarks at the end.
He's famously well studied so I don't doubt for a second that he'll be able to pull it off. I'm curious if he gets the ambiance just right, a key component in making a Western work. If anyone could do it though, I believe it's Spielberg.
